New York State Pushes to Strengthen Its Equine Industry

Empire Racing Associates brought its media campaign to Governor Eliot Spitzer’s doorstep on Tuesday, holding a press conference with agricultural and educational leaders about its plan to boost upstate New York’s economy with equine events and programs.

Empire has touted its equine economic development plan for several months, asserting that the Empire plan can put upstate New York on a par with Kentucky with things such as building a New York Horse Park, hosting the World Equestrian Games, and investing in breeding programs and higher education.

“A revitalized racing industry can and should create jobs for upstate New York as well as generate a better return for taxpayers across the state,” Empire Chief Executive Officer Jeff Perlee said. “This is a golden opportunity for the governor and the legislature to turn a crisis into opportunity, particularly as they look for economic development initiatives that will boost upstate.”
